No, the $300 Apple book isn’t an April Fool’s joke

“Designed by Apple in California” is 450 pages of gadget porn photography.

Apple Book:

The week’s tech headlines were obviously dominated by Facebook and its fake news problem, but let’s not forget another important event: Apple released a $300 (U.S.) book.

Called Designed by Apple in California, it’s a 450-page showcase of the company’s products from the past and present as shot by Andrew Zuckerman, an American photographer who specializes in putting subjects against stark white backgrounds.

The cover is white linen while the pages are “specially milled, custom-dyed paper with gilded matte silver edges,” which is probably why the larger version is $300 and the smaller one is $200.

If this had happened at any other time of the year – say, closer to the beginning of April – it might have been interpreted as a joke. But, with reality considerably off kilter this year, why the hell not release a book that costs more than an iPad Mini?

Reactions on Twitter were about what you’d imagine:

Needless to say, Apple releasing a $300 book of what is essentially gadget porn is in keeping with the company’s recent direction. It’s all about the courage.
